Why CarderSound?

A little about the company

Here will we sit and let the sounds of music

Creep in our ears.

The Merchant of Venice, V, 1.

CarderSound, founded by Jeff Carder in 2007, is perhaps remarkable for the things it does not offer.

It does not offer loudspeakers using the high-technology cone material flavor of the month. It does not offer a myriad of different model ranges. It does not offer a fashionable, hyper-compact hideaway Home Theatre package that could fit into a moderately sized handbag. It does not offer loudspeakers featuring ‘new, exclusive, and radical technology.’

CarderSound does not, and never will, do any of these things. So, what then is there left for CarderSound to offer to the music lover in our fast paced modern world?

Dedication.

CarderSound loves music. Music matters. In our age of ever increasing stresses, the importance of the musical expression is as great as it ever has been, if not more so. It is our love and passion for this art that drives us, and inspires our loudspeakers.

Craftsmanship.

Not one piece of MDF, particleboard or plastic are found in CarderSound cabinets, which are crafted on the Eastern Seaboard of the United States, entirely from natural solid woods and maple wood-plys, from environmentally sustainable sources. These materials were carefully selected for providing exactly the right combinations of stiffness and density required by our cabinets. All panels are CNC machined to exacting tolerances before being hand assembled, using time-honored techniques of precision-joinery, and finished by artisans with three coats of natural clear lacquer. Construction and finish are to the standard of fine furniture.

Design.

CarderSound loudspeaker systems are designed in the United Kingdom and Canada, using traditional principles established by some of the greatest names in audio –Keele, Leach, Olson, Rayleigh, Voigt, and Webster, in conjunction with the latest in computer modeling software. This combination has allowed us to refine and tailor our speaker systems to meet their respective goals with a startling degree of precision. They exemplify or philosophy requiring the artistic application of science.

Why full-range drivers? Simplicity, and elegance. No electrical crossovers, with all their attendant issues, in the all important midrange. Rapid response to musical transients due to the powerful motor & low voice-coil inductance of the drivers we employ. Precision imaging and ‘see-though’ clarity are the traits a listener will notice first. The pair-matched drivers used in CarderSound loudspeaker systems are the highly developed Planet10 range of custom 4 1/2in, 6 1/2in and 8in units from Canada, featuring hand-painted EnABL surface-wave diffraction blocks.

Why horns? Efficiency. Horns allow a better impedance match of the driver diaphragm to the air than any other form of loudspeaker enclosure. CarderSound use several different types of horn to best exploit the properties of the drive units, and achieve the desired results from each speaker in the range.

Why the twin mouth layout used in several of our speakers? This relatively unusual configuration provides a larger mouth area, and sense of height, depth and scale to the soundstage beyond that of a single-mouth design of equivalent footprint. In addition, the folding scheme and internal layout of all CarderSound cabinets are specifically designed to assist in filtering off unwanted midrange frequencies in the horn, thus further improving imaging & response. They also maximize the use of the available cabinet volume: CarderSound Horns have no voids anywhere in their design, this efficient use of space bringing with it obvious sonic and environmental benefits. Combined with our carefully selected materials, this means our speakers provide the listener with a very clean sound, devoid of the hollow colorations that plague many other designs.

Binding posts are WBT Signature Series, mass-loaded by dedicated aluminum mounting plates.

Internal wire is propriety L.A.T. International ‘Silverfuse.’ We have found this wire to extract every last bit of detail while at the same time providing a very smooth presentation that is soft on the ears. We have found it to be an ideal match for our speakers. From the LAT International Web Site:

Silverfuse is a near alloy of silver and copper…our [Silverfuse] process starts with six nines OFHC copper wire with a diameter that is slightly larger than the required size. It is then pulled through a trough of molten silver. The wire with a silver deposit, is then forced through a compacting die where it is subject to tremendous pressure. The silver and the high purity copper are fused together into a near alloy. The compacting fusion also reduces the wire diameter to the desired size... The result provides for the benefits of silver; which are excellent definition and clarity, with the high purity copper benefits of warmth and mellowness.

CarderSound is more than a business, it's a mission.  We have set out and designed a company that provides value that is "off the charts", when compared to other options you might have with designs of this nature, or any speaker design, for that matter.  Arguably, we offer the most reasonable and competitive prices in the industry, without sacrificing the quality, custom craftsmanship of our builds.  The design is rare and unique, the custom craftsmanship is second to none, and priced so that the largest audience possible, can enjoy true high end sound without breaking the bank.  From our first listen, we were hooked, and we are confident you will be, too.

" I just felt like it was time for a company like ours to flex its wings in this great audio jungle.  A company, that at its very core, would care enough about our distinguished hobby, to help serious audio enthusiasts and hobbyists obtain top shelf, high end sound in their homes without clubbing them over the head when it came to price.  Mission accomplished."
                                                               Jeff Carder
